Fashions repeat. Fashion repeats. We’re constantly borrowing from the old, re-interpreting the yesterdays or simply discovering things again. In Fashion, nothing has been left untold – they are saying.
But what is that exactly that is repeating? Which are the elements that we’re constantly get- ting back at? Could one put that in a system? Is there a grid, a set of rules that describes how fashion is moving “on” ?
These are the questions, that i wanted to respond to with my thesis project (diploma) in fashion design at school of Art and Design Berlin-Weißensee: I’m conceptually breaking up clothes into modules of style, comfort and functionality, so that they are recombinable by the customer – today – the user.
“12 / 6 / 24″ is the name of the collection, and also stands for the grid that i defined as a glo- bal technical outline for all the pieces. My finally designed collection is considered to be a snapshot of what is possible within the rules of that grid. Opposed to a classically harmonic collection, i focused on visualizing the wide range of possibilities within my system.
“12 / 6 / 24″ further is designed using non-colors on top of very basic and clear colors - re- miniscential of the bauhaus approach. The clear color scheme in the premier collection was chosen to highlight the pattern system that i developed. Following collections could very well vary in that respect.
The collection is released as a first issue of my systemic design. For that i chose classical garment patterns, that kept coming up and back repeatedly in the many decades of known fashion history. To do that, i observed and examined how lines, cuts and seams were mo- ving over the years in the context of social developments. The length of a skirt is probably the clearest example for that. On top of the classical patterns, i added elements rather known from the last decades. Such as the “square shoulder”.
The collection as well as my work in fashion theory emphasize the human nature of longing for individuality. Fashion - more than anything - is the visible result of that nature. It is con- stantly kept alive by the visible specialness of individuals followed closely by the adopters that is the masses.
“The only constant in fashion is change.”, stated Georg Simmel already back in 1905.
My BUILDING KIT is designed to hand users both a toy and a tool to play on their own sty- le, and discover their own specialness.
From about the beginning of the 19th century, fashion magazines started to deliver inspirati- on and even sewing patterns for do-it-yourself manufacturing into people’s homes. Today it is the internet, with its reinvented possibilities to do similar and much more. Each 2 seconds there is a piece of garment resold on Ebay.de, and sites like “Looklet” invite everyone to try out as a stylist for both themselves and others.
Starting the project i did a survey with 150 people, examining their interest in being able to design their own garments and collections over the internet. The positive response was overwhelming.
Based on the results i developed a website in cooperation with graphic designer Andrea Schulz that would people let do just that. The Web Application enables visitors to explore different textiles, combine patterns and save them save them as custom designs. Ordered garments are to be manufactured on explicit demand, effectively reducing overproduction. Since the system is based on pattern modules, it is also perfectly suited to be extended by adding new elements – making it timeless as well as responsive to new influences.
